Moy Tung Chi Sao training - Anniversary workshops April 27 - May 3

In Ving Tsun Kung Fu, we don't spar or fight our classmates. Instead, we do something that's both safer and more effective for developing real-world fighting skills; Chi Sao, or "Sticking Hands. Chi Sao trains the hands how to attack and defend at the same time, how to simultaneously stop any technique from getting in while controlling an opponent's hands and attacking their vital points.

We practice Chi Sao with all types of people - big, small, strong, weak, short and tall. By doing this, we gain familiarity with a broad range of energies and personalities, which helps us to identify areas in which we can improve. Working with another person's energy helps us notice where tension is in our own bodies, so we can relax, sink deeper into our horse stance and control the centerline.

There are 20 schools around the U.S. in the Moy Tung lineage. People regularly travel to schools in other cities, especially Richmond, VA where the Moy Tung Kung Fu Association headquarters is located, for training, including Chi Sao with kung fu uncles, nephews and cousins. Forms, especially Siu Nim Tao, are the foundation of Ving Tsun Kung Fu training, but Chi Sao accelerates and advances a student's progress tremendously. Four of the seven days open for anniversary week training will have portions devoted to aspects of Chi Sao.

Take a look at the techniques being demonstrated by Grandmaster Moy Tung in the below photos. Someone very perceptive might learn some important details by studying these photos. However, if you are not already a Moy Tung Kung Fu student, know that it's simpler, quicker and more effective to enroll and train regularly at a Moy Tung-lineage Ving Tsun Kung Fu school near you. If you wish to learn kung fu as a hobby or for self-defense, that's great - but you will be training on a path that leads to mastery. You can go as far as you want in the system - even to becoming a martial arts master, Ving Tsun Kung Fu sifu and school owner. You will also have the opportunity to train at these workshops, which are open to active Moy Tung Kung Fu students, or by invitation.

Grandmaster Moy Tung makes contact with Sifu Stuart Zeno's arm, preparing to do Lop Dar (grab/trap and strike). In the background are Sifu Barry O'Brien, and senior master instructor Vince Cheng.Grandmaster Moy Tung traps Sifu Stuart Zeno's hands and does a Wong Jeang (side-palm strike) to his throat. In Moy Tung Kung Fu, we train to hit the chest in Chi Sao, as this is safer, more difficult and more effective for developing fighting skill - if you can hit someone's chest, it's easy to hit their face. Moy Tung is attacking the throat here as a way of teaching his senior students, and is not injuring Stuart. In the background are Sifu Barry O'Brien, and senior master instructor Vince Cheng.
